It is the therapeutic application of music that supports development or rehabilitation of skills in domains of cognition, speech/language, and sensorimotor function. It is implemented by a professional who holds the Music-Therapist Board Certified credential (MT-BC) and who has completed advanced training in NMT through the Academy of Neurologic Music Therapy. Anyone affected by neurologic disease or injury including but not limited to traumatic brain injury, acquired brain injury, stroke, Parkinson's, and dementia. Simply enjoying music does not necessarily mean someone will be a good candidate for music therapy; however, if the individual is motivated by music and is in need of support to target goals in non-musical areas such as speech/language, cognition, and/or sensorimotor then neurologic music therapy could be the perfect fit! Instruments are often played in sessions both by the therapist and the client; however, music background is not needed! The job of the neurologic music therapist is to make sessions accessible to the client to fit their individual level of functioning by adapting as needed.
